Green Business
The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is taking steps to establish the Lake Tahoe basin as an environmental business powerhouse and world sustainability leader. We also seek to encourage best practices that inspire our members and the community with the vision and means to improve our local economy and environment. We aim to achieve a vibrant economy and ensure a sustainable future.
April 2011: Did you know? The typical small business spends about 18% of its gross income on energy bills. The California Air Resources Board wants to help all businesses become sustainable. In their brochure Sustainability: Good for Your Business and the Environment (PDF) they recommend several no- or low-cost actions you can take, and offer even more resources online at www.coolcalifornia.org.
October 2010: The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, also known as CalRecycle, is working to advance its tire waste reduction efforts and promote the use of tire derived products. It is CalRecycle’s goal to reduce the amount of tires that occupy California’s landfills by putting unwanted tires to use through its “Green Roads” program.
The “Green Roads” program promotes the use of shredded or ground scrap tires in paving and construction projects, keeping old tires out of landfills and away from fields and alleyways. These recycled tires can be used as inexpensive backfill behind retaining walls, or as an asphalt additive with many benefits such as durability, and noise reduction. Using recycled tires to build greener roads is not only good for the environment; it’s good for the bottom line.
